Planning an Africa Safari

Last December, our family embarked on an unforgettable journey through Africa, a continent steeped in diverse cultures, breathtaking landscapes, and remarkable wildlife. With the assistance of Roane Travel, we meticulously planned a two-week itinerary spanning Rwanda and Tanzania, eagerly anticipating the exploration that lay ahead.

Exploring Rwanda

Our journey through Africa commenced in Rwanda, a country of profound resilience and captivating beauty. The sense of pride in the cleanliness of the community was a great teacher for us.  Every Saturday, residents dutifully participate in street and community clean-up activities.  This is a testament to their commitment to preserving their surroundings. This dedication to maintaining a clean environment resonated deeply with us, reflecting the unity and solidarity ingrained in Rwandan culture.

As we ventured into Volcanoes National Park to embark on a once-in-a-lifetime trek to observe mountain gorillas, we were humbled.  The indomitable spirit of the Rwandan people was impressive. Despite the lingering scars of the genocide, their resilience and capacity for joy were palpable. The experience of encountering these majestic creatures in their natural habitat was profoundly moving.  It left an indelible imprint on our hearts and souls.

Let the Tanzania Adventures Begin!

Transitioning to Tanzania, we embarked on a captivating journey through Africa and Tanzania’s northeastern region, immersing ourselves in the splendor of its national parks. From Tarangire National Park to Lake Manyara and Ngorongoro, each destination offered unparalleled opportunities to witness Africa’s iconic wildlife in their natural habitats.  The sight of lions lounging in the sun, cubs frolicking under the watchful gaze of their mothers, and the breathtaking panorama of the crater left us spellbound.

Our stay at Neptune Lodge, nestled on the outskirts of Ngorongoro National Park, provided us with a front-row seat to the wonders surrounding the crater. One night baboons even found our bungalo and could be heard running around on the deck and the roof!  Talk about an up close view of wildlife!

Seeing the Serengeti Up Close

However, our sojourn in the Serengeti truly encapsulated the essence of the African wilderness. At Siringit Migration Camp, we were welcomed with jubilant songs and embraced by the untamed beauty of the savannah. From our luxurious tent, we marveled at the spectacle of wildlife unfolding before our eyes, including a close encounter with African Cape Buffalos that left us awestruck.

As night descended upon the Serengeti, we found ourselves serenaded by the symphony of the wild, the rhythmic sounds of nature lulling us into a state of reverie. After laying awake to the occasional rustle of the tent and the presence of wildlife mere steps away, we eventually drifted off to sleep with a profound sense of peace enveloping us—a testament to the harmony that exists between humans and the natural world in Africa.

Exploring Our Version of Africa Paradise

The final leg of our extraordinary journey took us on a thrilling flight in a small plane to Lobo airport, where we were warmly greeted by the enthusiastic staff of TAASA Lodge. Eager to immerse ourselves in the wonders of the Serengeti one last time, we embarked on an exhilarating game drive en route to the lodge, encountering a myriad of wildlife from the get-go.

As we arrived at TAASA Lodge, nestled amidst the untamed beauty of the Serengeti, we were immediately captivated by its charm. Designed by a talented South African designer, the lodge exuded an air of elegance and sophistication that left us in awe. From the meticulously curated interiors to the sweeping views of the surrounding landscape, every detail spoke of unparalleled luxury and refinement. As we stepped into our accommodations, I couldn’t help but marvel at the thought of remodeling my own home to mirror the splendor of this magnificent retreat.

Over the next five days, we relished every moment spent at TAASA Lodge, indulging in exhilarating game drives through the Serengeti’s vast plains and expansive savannahs. Each outing brought us face to face with Africa’s most iconic wildlife, from towering giraffes to majestic lions, offering glimpses into the intricate tapestry of life that thrives in this untamed wilderness.

A Day in the Village on Our Journey Through Africa

In addition to our wildlife encounters, we seized the opportunity to immerse ourselves in the rich cultural heritage of the region. We explored a nearby village, where we had the privilege of visiting a local school and interacting with the Maasai community. Their warmth and hospitality left an indelible impression on us, serving as a poignant reminder of the enduring bond between humanity and nature.

As we bid farewell to TAASA Lodge and the boundless wonders of the Serengeti, we carried with us not only memories of awe-inspiring landscapes and unforgettable wildlife sightings but also a deep appreciation for the profound connections forged during our time in Africa. Our journey had been a testament to the transformative power of travel, opening our hearts and minds to the beauty and diversity of our world.

There are profound differences in the access to clean water in the world.  Witnessing firsthand the resilience and resourcefulness of communities in Rwanda and Tanzania underscored the importance of addressing such fundamental needs.

Clean Water is a Right!

We are taking action and making a meaningful difference in the lives of those less fortunate as a result of these experiences. With this in mind, we launched a fundraiser dedicated to providing clean water to the village of Mairowa in Tanzania—a cause close to our hearts.

Access to clean water is a basic human right, yet for many communities around the world, it remains a distant dream. In Mairowa, families travel long distances to fetch water from unreliable sources, risking their health and well-being in the process. By supporting this fundraiser, we aim to provide sustainable solutions that will ensure access to clean water for generations to come.

Help Us Today!

We invite you to join us in our efforts to make a tangible impact on the lives of the people of Mairowa.  We have partnered with two amazing and reputable organizations, Wine To Water and Empower with Purpose and would love to also partner with you.  Every donation, no matter how small, will help us bring clean water closer to reality for this deserving community. Together, we can turn dreams of clean water into a reality and empower communities to thrive.

Reflecting on Our Journey Through Africa

As we reflect on our journey through Africa, we now know, we have the power to affect change.  Through acts of kindness and generosity, we can create a brighter future for all, one drop of water at a time. Thank you for joining us on this journey of compassion and hope.

As we boarded our flight home, our souls brimming with gratitude and reverence, we knew that Africa had left an indelible mark on us—one that would continue to inspire and enrich our lives for years to come. Soaring through the boundless skies, our hearts filled with the echoes of Africa’s untamed beauty.

Our journey through Africa visiting Rwanda and Tanzania was more than just a vacation; it was a transformative experience that broadened our horizons, deepened our appreciation for nature, and reaffirmed our belief in the resilience of the human spirit. As we bid farewell to Africa, we carried with us memories that will last a lifetime and a renewed sense of gratitude for the beauty and diversity of our world.

Please leave us a message if you are interested in volunteering in Mairowa with us, going on safari or both.  We will be planning a trip back to Tanzania in the near future and would love to have you along!
